Protein Analysis in Dairy Products with LECO – Part 2
In the second part of this blog series, we will detail a comparison test for determining non-protein nitrogen (NPN) and non-casein nitrogen (NCN).

We are introducing a short series of blog posts to explore the benefits of the Dumas method of protein determination with a focus on milk and milk products.
Unlike the Kjeldahl method, the Dumas method avoids toxic acids, making it safer for the environment and health. It is also simpler, faster, and more sustainable. Many food labs now prefer or supplement the Kjeldahl method with the Dumas method for protein determination in food and feed.
When determining total nitrogen (or protein) of a sample using LECO’s FP828, it is crucial to select the right sample container for the job. Several key considerations must be taken into account, like the sample mass capacities of the container, compatibility of the container with the matrix, ash production, and more.
In the world of plastics and polymers, precision matters. From everyday items to high-performance materials, the quality and consistency of polymers directly impacts their functionality. One often overlooked but critical aspect of polymer production is Nitrogen testing.

Despite a growing call for renewable energy sources, the market for coal has remained strong. Determine the strength of your coal with LECO’s CHN828.
Learn how farmers can rely on something more scientific than a crystal ball with an on-demand webinar about carbon and nitrogen analysis in fields.
With helium shortage after helium shortage, it has never been more important to find ways to minimize your helium usage.
The 828 series now can analyze hydrogen as well as carbon and nitrogen for one instrument that can do your petrochemical analysis with a single sample.
LECO’s CNS928 carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur determinator can take uncertainty out of soil ratios when determining fertilization for crop growth.
Nitrogen content in food materials is necessary to measure when determining the total protein content. Performing this measurement using classical “wet chemistry” can be slow and tedious. The combustion-based Dumas method significantly increases laboratory productivity; when the sample has a low-level of nitrogen, however, it poses unique challenges.
